Press Release following Radyr Weir Clear-up

Thanks to all who ventured to Radyr last Sunday to clean-up the River Taff below the weir.

19 volunteers (including 6 new recruits) spent over 2 hours collecting 36 bags of rubbish, traffic cones, road signs, carpets, bikes, car tyres and a transit-full of various waste from the banks of the Taff. Cardiff County Council has since disposed of the waste.

Group Member Nigel Barry, said, “Today has been another fantastic event with a good turnout of volunteers. Together we have managed to clean over 500m of the riverbank along with a small stretch of the Melingriffith canal. Every time I volunteer with Cardiff Rivers Group I am proud of how much waste we remove, yet I am still amazed at the variety of items we find. Today I collected a red corset from a tree in the river!”

Cardiff Rivers Group formed last year as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Tidy Towns’ project, a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Welsh local authorities. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government it supports the people of Wales to improve the quality of their local environment.

Committee member Louise Tambini said, “Our hard-working volunteers really are amazing and no project is too big for us to tackle. We are currently planning our event locations up until Christmas, so if anyone knows of any litter hotspots along Cardiff’s watercourses that need attention, please let us know” she added.
