Cardiff Rivers Group celebrate grant award by cleaning up River Taff over Easter

Cardiff Rivers Group gave up their lovely Easter weekend yesterday to return to Bute Park to clean-up the River Taff.  Photos can be viewed here

19 volunteers made the most of the low water levels to get into the river and collect 30 bags of rubbish, 3 bikes, tyres, gas canister, 3 trollies, metres of cable, metal waste and 2 very soggy, heavy carpets from the riverbed!

Group Member Louise Tambini, said, “It was great to see so many volunteers give up their Easter weekend to come and help today; we even had a new volunteer from a group in Risca who wanted to help clean a river; she got into a pair of waders for the first time today!”

Cardiff Rivers Group formed in 2009 as part of Keep Wales Tidy’s ‘Tidy Towns’ project, a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Welsh local authorities. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government it supports the people of Wales to improve the quality of their local environment.

The group have recently been awarded a grant of £5,000 from Cardiff County Council’s Tidy Towns budget to help purchase new equipment.

Group Secretary, Dave King said, “We are absolutely delighted to receive this cash boost. We have been struggling to find a safe storage location for our ever-growing amount of tools and also are in need of more equipment due to the sheer number of volunteers who regularly come along to help. This grant will enable us to buy a storage container to house all our gear. It will also allow us to buy more waders, ropes, harnesses, tools, gloves and equipment to keep our volunteers safe and enable us to tackle new areas”.

“We would also like to thank the people who donate equipment to our group. This month alone we have been offered 4 pairs of waders and some ‘sharps’ boxes by people who have seen our work in the local paper; now that we have a place to store equipment, all gifts are very welcome indeed!”, Dave added.

Cardiff Rivers Group are always looking for new volunteers, so if you would like to lend a hand, please contact Louise Tambini on 07824 504790 or email louise.tambini@keepwalestidy.org. The next project will take place in Saturday 7thMay.
