During half term, whilst a riding a water taxi from Cardiff Bay with her Nan, Izzy Evans-Boon, aged 5, from Coed Glas school, Llanishen, spotted some particularly bad litter spots along the banks of the River Taff. Izzy's nan got in contact with the Cardiff Rivers Group committee who agreed to use Izzy's idea as the focus of their next event.
On Sunday, 11th of November, Cardiff Rivers Group fulfilled their promise and met at the Taff embankment for their litter pick. 20 volunteers (including 4 new volunteers) turned up and collected 26 bags of rubbish, as well as a bike frame, a fire extinguisher, 2 footballs, a cricket bat, 3 umbrella's, a trolley, a DVD player, a hand basin and an estate agents sign. On the darker side, a large number of syringes and hypodermic needles were collected and subsequently dropped off at the local police station for safe disposal.
All rubbish was disposed of by Cardiff County Council’s Parks Department.
This litter pick shows that regardless of age, litter is a problem that is easily recognised and with the right contacts and motivation, litter hotspots can be tackled and remedied. During the event, a large numbers of passers-by stopped to chat and thanked the group for their hard work, and 2 new members were recruited.
