20 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group returned to Llanrumney on Saturday following a request for assistance from Llanrumney Communities First team.
The experienced volunteers joined 8 local residents for 2 hours on Saturday 3rd September for their second clean up of the River Rhymney. Many of the volunteers donned waders to remove rubbish from the riverbed, including lots of the local young people who enjoyed wading looking for rubbish.
Together, they collected tonnes of rubbish from the littered river including: a moped, two bicycles, a microwave, a beer keg, plastic road barriers, two corrugated iron sheets, car tyres, five trolleys, approx 30 sacks of rubbish, several large unidentified metal things, and at least one tonne of scrap/general waste. Other volunteers litter-picked the surrounding woodland and managed to collect several bags of recyclable materials (cans and plastic bottles). All rubbish was collected and disposed of by Cardiff County Council’s Parks Department.
Volunteers were rewarded by the Communities First team who kindly provided pizza and refreshments at the end of the hard day’s work.
Cardiff Rivers Group Secretary, Dave King, said, “We are always happy to lend a hand to any residents who want to improve their local area. It was great seeing the young people work so hard today hauling trolleys out of the river, and they have set an excellent example to other people living on the estate. I wish them all the best in setting up their own group and hopefully other residents will get involved in future events”.
Amy McCarthy, Llanrumney Communities First Development Worker said, “I would like to say another big thank you to Cardiff Rivers Group and Keep Wales Tidy for taking the time to come back into Llanrumney to assist the community with the huge task of cleaning the Rhymney River! This river clean has raised awareness of the environmental issues that are current in the area and again displayed the hard work of local residents and young people who worked amazing together with the Rivers team!”
