Last Saturday, 36 volunteers from Cardiff Rivers Group joined members of Llandaff Rowing Club for a work day to get the river spick and span for their annual regatta. Volunteers split into groups to improve both sides of the river, removing litter and waste and overgrown vegetation from the banks to ensure the river is in pristine condition for the upcoming races. Together the work party removed 2 trollies, a toilet and 18 bags of rubbish from the riverbanks. They also pulled up hundreds of Himalyan Balsam plants, opened up views to the river by removing stands of bamboo, cleared overgrown vegetation from the ‘stewards station’ to ensure the races could be properly refereed and cut back overhanging branches that were dangerous for racing boats.
Afterwards all helpers were treated to a BBQ by the Rowing Club.
Louise Tambini from Cardiff Rivers Group said, ”It was a wonderful turnout today and was great to see so many people working together. Our volunteers were happy to help their fellow river users in preparation for their regatta and hope it all goes well for them. We are very grateful for Llandaff Rowing Club’s hospitality and the food they kindly provided, and I hope we can work together again in the future”.

Cardiff Rivers Group formed in 2009 as part of the ‘Tidy Towns’ project: a partnership between Keep Wales Tidy and Welsh local authorities. Funded by the Welsh Government it supports the people of Wales to improve the quality of their local environment.
The group’s next events are the AGM on Thurs 12th July, and Himalyan Balsam removal on Saturday 14thJuly.
