First Spring Clean of 2013!

Over 20 volunteers from the Cardiff Rivers Group (CRG) and Cardiff Trail Scrubs (CTS) braved the winter temperatures to undertake their first clean of 2013 by tackling the feeder by Brigantine Place near to the Cardiff Bay Novotel. Supporting Associated British Ports who rely on the feeder to top up Atlantic Wharf, this was the third event in this area, this weekend tackling from the railway line to the Herbert St/Tyndall St. bridge. This section had never been cleaned before and over the years had become an increasing eyesore, as well as restricting the flow of water. The feeder was beyond filthy - probably one of the worst stretches of water ways that the Cardiff Rivers Group has ever tackled.

 

In just over 2 hours, the eager volunteers managed to completely fill a skip  with a haul that included 4 lorry tyres, 5ft gas canister, rotary washing line, prams, pallets, traffic cones, road signs, a tumble dryer, numerous clothes and bedding, scrap metal, plastic road barriers and of course shopping trolleys!

Gerard Opel, Chair of the Cardiff Rivers Group said “It's amazing how much junk was taken out of a one hundred metre stretch of river and certainly rewarding to see a fully filled skip after two hours hard, but enjoyable graft.  When you consider that we need to look at all of the waterways in Cardiff you begin to realise the scale of what we still need to achieve...".
