Action to protect Llandaf Fields

Llandaf Fields People’s Hub has been launched in response to a development threat to this area of much-loved and well-used parkland.

A plan to build a large, privatised development with access road, parking , enclosed 3G pitch and a bar for 600 people standing has met with a huge amount of opposition from park users.

Llandaf Fields People’s Hub aims to protect the fields, maintaining sporting activities such as rugby, bowls and tennis, and replacing the changing rooms with a low impact, sedum roofed structure that is sympathetic to its surroundings within a listed, historic park.

Plans are also afoot to help wildlife, with further tree planting proposed around the the beautiful copse adjacent to the changing rooms, and the creation of a wildflower meadow to help bees – a species in serious decline.

The Hub’s slogan will be Parks for All, Parciau i Bawb, and charities associated with the Hub, such as homeless people’s service provider, The Wallich, Communities First and Age Cymru, as well as other vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, will be encouraged enjoy the parkland, and activities such as tennis and bowling.

“We aim to promote recreational use of the park for all ages and abilities, while protecting the fields from development and privatisation.  The Church Commissioners gave the park to the people of Cardiff for sport and recreation, not for development and individual gain,” said Councillor Iona Gordon, trustee of the Hub.

“In the last 40 years we have already lost more than a third of our central parkland to creeping development, much of which has taken place in recent years, and it has to stop.  Llandaf Fields  must be protected for the health and wellbeing of the people, and for the benefit of generations to come. Green space cannot be plundered  on our watch.”

A public meeting has been arranged for June 4, 7-9pm at The Wallich, Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9JF.
